Arterial anastomoses in the head and neck of the sheep.

چکیده
No complete description of the vascular system of the head and neck of the sheep is available, and references to isolated parts of the system are scattered. Canova (1909) has made a study of the internal maxillary artery with reference to the external ophthalmic artery, and a diagram from Canova's work is to be found in Ellenberger & Baum (1943). Daniel, Dawes & Prichard (1953) have described the carotid rete and associated arteries of various animals, including sheep. Observations have been made by Balankura (1954) on the development of the intra-cranial rete in sheep. Prichard & Daniel (1954) have made a study of the arteriovenous anastomoses in the tongue of the sheep and goat. The description of the cerebral and spinal circulations of the sheep and ox by Andersson & Jewell (1956) differs in some details from the findings of May (1965) which were based on dissections and latex injected corrosive preparations of eighty sheep. Carlysle & Grayson (1956) have investigated the contribution of the carotid artery to cerebral flow in sheep, goats and rabbits. Appleton & Waites ( (1957) have illustrated vascular structures ventral to the external ear of the sheep, and Linzell & Waites (1957) have studied the effects of occluding the carotid and vertebral arteries of sheep, and indicated one of the channels which developed subsequently. Waites (1960) has described the arteries to the brain and spinal cord of sheep. Bagedda, Maguledda, Loverci & Lepori (1963) have made arteriographs of the cerebral circulation, and Lewin (1963) has studied the blood supply of the internal ear. Baldwin & Bell (1963) have studied the dynamic distribution of blood to the cranial region of sheep and cattle by unilateral and bilateral injections of various dyes into the vertebral and common carotid arteries. May (1965) has disagreed with the origin of the ventral spinal artery, as shown in their diagram. May (1964) has described the major branches of the arterial system of the head and neck.

Arterial coupling for microvascular free tissue transfer in head and neck reconstruction.
OBJECTIVE To demonstrate the efficacy of arterial coupling. DESIGN We report our experience in head and neck reconstruction with the Unilink Microvascular Anastomotic System (Synovis MCA, Birmingham, Ala). Data were collected in a consecutive series of 49 patients undergoing composite resection of head and neck tumors followed by free tissue transfer. SETTING All patient care took place at ...
متن کاملAnalysis of risk factors for flap loss and salvage in free flap head and neck reconstruction.
BACKGROUND Risk factors and techniques for free flap salvage in head and neck reconstruction are poorly described. METHODS We conducted a retrospective review of all head and neck free flaps performed from 2000 to 2010. RESULTS Overall, 151 of 2296 flaps (6.6%) underwent salvage for microvascular complications. Age, comorbidities, surgeon experience (p = .88), vein grafts, and supercharging...
متن کاملDual Vascular Free Anterolateral Thigh Flap
BACKGROUND The optimum number of microvascular anastomoses for safe free tissue transfer is controversial. Although the case for 2 venous anastomoses versus 1 anastomosis has been argued, the use of an additional arterial anastomosis has not been examined in detail. METHODS Twelve patients who underwent 2 arterial anastomoses for a free flap transfer were identified retrospectively from the m...
متن کاملClinical experience in end-to-side venous anastomoses with a microvascular anastomotic coupling device in head and neck reconstruction.
BACKGROUND Microvascular anastomosis remains one of the most technically sensitive aspects of free-tissue transfer reconstructions. Despite the availability of various mechanical anastomotic coupling systems for human clinical use during the last 8 years, reported clinical series remain rare. OBJECTIVE To describe a clinical experience in applying a mechanical microvascular anastomotic coupli...
متن کاملRadiographic Anatomy of the Head of Sheep
Objective- The purpose of this study was to assess and describe the radiographic anatomy of the bony structures in the head of sheep. Design- Experimental study. Animals- Fifteen mature Afshari sheep. Procedures- Radiographs were made out of the head of the animals in lateral and dorsoventral views. Radiographic anatomy was analyzed with results from gross dissection of 5 specimens. Results- De...
